Pencil-Sharp’s content developers, editors and designers are involved in producing many of the educational publications available to primary schools. Many of our team have primary-aged children of their own. We believe we are uniquely positioned to make informed recommendations to you. Here are some of the gems we’ve discovered recently:

Real Reads recreates the classics for primary-aged schoolchildren (8–13). Intelligently written, innovative, and beautifully illustrated, these retellings succeed where most abridged versions fail. Distinctive features include:
• ‘The Characters’ – a double-page illustrated spread introducing the main characters in the book
• ‘Filling in the Spaces’ – outlining subplots from the original work not included in the Real Read version
• ‘Back in Time’ – looks at the social and historical context of the book
• ‘Finding out More’ – books and online resources
• ‘Food for Thought’ – ideas about style and themes for the reader to explore
Real Reads make accessible great stories, great characters and important moral debates which the young reader might otherwise never have encountered. This is a great resource for nurturing keen, confident readers.

Launched on Father’s day 2007 Wholly Irresponsible Experiments has been a great success in the nostalgic Dads market. We think it’s full of great material for wholly irresponsible teachers too!
To facilitate use in the classroom, we’ve prepared a teacher guide cross-referencing the contents to the Key Stages 1 and 2 national curriculum for science. Supplementary activities and web resources fill in the gaps in the book’s coverage.
Scores of experiments take you through a dazzling array of not just snaps, crackles and pops, but oozes, crashes, booms and stinks. Irresponsible – maybe. Cracking fun – definitely!

Founded in 1983, La Jolie Ronde offers unique, structured language learning for children aged 3−11. Already taught in approximately a third of all UK preparatory schools and in schools around the world as part of their syllabuses, La Jolie Ronde learning resources are now tailored for use with the national curriculum, helping children excel in MFL early in their school careers. La Jolie Ronde materials have been extensively tested by Wakefield LEA, a Pathfinder authority in primary languages. To encourage take-up in the state sector, Pencil-Sharp are offering a number of their resource packs.
La Jolie Ronde’s La Ronde des Histoires is a new resource for 5 to 7 year-olds to introduce them to French through four traditional stories, which come to life with colourful and fun activities and action songs. In addition, for years 3 and 4 we are offering Schemes of Work for French and Spanish, and for years 5 and 6 for French. With a teacher guide linked to the MFL Framework and four CDs-worth of supporting resources (audio CDs of songs, poems and other recordings of native French, or Spanish, speakers; flash cards; transcripts; PowerPoint presentations; and activities for use with the Interactive Whiteboard), these Scheme of Work resources are ideal for use by non-specialist teachers.
